How Will Truemors Fare?

In case anyone forgot, a site similar to Technorati debuted about a couple months ago and received a bit of negative response, due to spam, lack of a registration process and focus. Has Truemors received a fair chance?

Truemors is based on a site of telling rumors. It’s a very simple site, that possibly is wanting to obtain a feeling of a Digg or Technorati. Truemors is setup to drive traffic elsewhere by links entered by users, but all links are “rel=nofollow”, meaning that major search engines will not count the links. New Truemors are posted on the front page.

In its first week, Treumors debutted with an authority of 207 on Techorati and received over 260,000 page views on its first day, most likely due to Guy Kawasaki’s involvement. Not too bad. It seems that because Guy is working on the project, many have given it a second thought (he is a legend for his marketing work with Apple).

The buzz has quited down since then, but Guy is still very actively promoting Treumors, especially on his blog and it appears that Treumors can be used as an application on Facebook.

There are four ways to post a ‘rumor’ to the site.

  1. By calling
  2. By sending a text message
  3. By email
  4. By posting it on Tremors

Posting a Tremor with a link requires some html. If you’re not familiar with inserting a link using html, it’s pretty simple:

<a href=”insert-your-url-here>insert-the-text-you-want-anchored/hyperlinked</a>

I definitely give Guy a thumbs up for doing it all for about $12,000 but it does seem to be a lacking quite a bit focus and the site looks a bit boring. From how it functions, the site sorta reminds me of a cross between Twitter and Digg.

Now, posting is quite easy to the site but anything that is blatantly a self-promotion will be taken down. Guy gave an example saying that if you said “Best site for reviewing of wines”, it will be removed, but if you said “Did you hear about this new company with a winery system?” it will stick. Pretty much the site operates off of “Did you know that….(plugin fact or rumor” with a link to your content.

Overall, I have to agree with many of the critics out there is lack of focus on the site but sites could possibly gain some traffic from starting a ‘rumor’ on Truemor. I’ve been receiving traffic equal to that of visitors coming from MyBlogLog. If Guy could change the design, at the very least, it could draw more readers but for now it stands to show some promise in delivering a tiny bit of traffic. Traffic is good, right? :)
