So…You Have a Website But You Don’t Have Enough Traffic
Traffic can equal money if you are trying to monetize your website. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you are doing the basics in obtaining traffic to your site and YES, you’ve probably heard of a few of these before and there’s probably a reason why. They are important!
1) Get Involved – Yes, you’ve probably heard this one over and over and over again. But I receive a lot of traffic from getting involved in sites like StumbleUpon, Reddit, and MyBlogLog.
2) Comment on Blogs – You don’t have to be a ‘blog commenting whore’ but you shouldn’t be a ’scrooge’ either. Comment on blogs that are related to your site and make sure they are informative or well thought out because you’re building a reputation for yourself and your site.
3) Submit Articles – Submitting articles to website likes EzineArticles will definitely help you get some link-backs and get you noticed. My very first article immediately had 3 link-backs in the first week.
4) Submit to Directories – Submitting to Directories should probably be #1, because you probably want to get that out of the way first. It can be soooo very boring if you’re doing it yourself versus paying someone else to submit to 50+ directories or search engines. Personally I like to set aside some time at night and submit my site(s) to a large group of FREE directories to get me started. You could pay (which would usually get you listed quickly), but I’m cheap…I like to go the FREE route and then participate elsewhere to get links. It’s more fun. One site FreeWebSubmission.com will submit your site to a dozen or so directories instantly. I would definitely start with them and then submit to more, like one of the most important DMOZ.org.
5) Post Breaking News – Of course, only if appropriate. Paris going, leaving, then going back to jail has been pretty big news. If you can somehow tie that into what you are writing about, that’s great! You may get more visitors coming by that weren’t looking for you originally but now love your stuff and are a returning visitor.
6) Social Networking – I admit, this one can be a pain in the butt to upkeep. I would definitely start with setting up a MySpace page. MySpace owns approximately 80% of the social networking community. Invite members subscribed to groups related to your industry/niche. Take advantage of those channels. If you have a Facebook, Friendster, or another type of account, you can update your site to let all your friends and family know about your work. **Oh and please, if you do make a MySpace page. It’s hard to find a decent design, but try to keep it simple. A lot of those myspace pages drive my computer, speakers and eyes crazy!
7) And Lastly…Content is King - If your site isn’t worth reading, people won’t return no matter how many comments you’ve left or social networking sites you participate in. Try to keep your content updated and fresh.

Hey thanks for the heads up on freewebsubmission – hadn’t heard about that one, so thanks again!

It seems that your blog is rather new?
I suggest these 2 plugins:

The one above will have visitors solve simple maths to post their comments. Cut off A LOT of spam for me.

Hey, thanks. I didn’t know about the free web submission site. I’m going to submit mine. Hopefully I’ll see some quality traffic come through.
Do directories really do anything? I have pretty much given up on them. How do you tell if you get anything out of submitting to them?
whoops! I left out my .com on the end!
DayJobNuker – I think getting your site listed in a few places is important for a new blog starting out. Some directories are better than others, and I’ve always been one to vote for ‘free’ options. I would probably forget about DMOZ as I just heard that Shoemoney was asked by their group to pay $5,000 to retain his listing. He refused (even with his deep pockets) and his listing was removed. I don’t think I would have used my 1.1 million monthly online media budget (when I was working full-time with a company, this isn’t my pocketbook…I wish). Paying $5,000 for a directory listing is high for the DMOZ. I wouldn’t have seen enough of an ROI through that avenue. Many years ago, maybe yes…but not now. There are so many other opportunities to gain exposure/links, etc…through more ‘fun’ means while building exposure.
great site and ever so helpfull
thanks…
