DayJobNuker – I think getting your site listed in a few places is important for a new blog starting out. Some directories are better than others, and I’ve always been one to vote for ‘free’ options. I would probably forget about DMOZ as I just heard that Shoemoney was asked by their group to pay $5,000 to retain his listing. He refused (even with his deep pockets) and his listing was removed. I don’t think I would have used my 1.1 million monthly online media budget (when I was working full-time with a company, this isn’t my pocketbook…I wish). Paying $5,000 for a directory listing is high for the DMOZ. I wouldn’t have seen enough of an ROI through that avenue. Many years ago, maybe yes…but not now. There are so many other opportunities to gain exposure/links, etc…through more ‘fun’ means while building exposure.

Do directories really do anything? I have pretty much given up on them. How do you tell if you get anything out of submitting to them?

Hey, thanks. I didn’t know about the free web submission site. I’m going to submit mine. Hopefully I’ll see some quality traffic come through.
