Uh-Oh, Have You Backed Up Recently?

**Update! I’ve been alerted that there may be a possible security hole with the WordPress Backup. To avoid being hacked and till the author of the plugin is notified and another update is given, backup your sites manually.

For a split second today I thought I lost a chunk of a couple of my websites. I nearly had a meltdown until my hosting servers came back up and I found nothing was lost.

Could you imagine? Losing everything on your site. No content, Nada left.

I do have a backup in place but haven’t changed the settings – it was set on weekly. When my server came back up, the first thing I did was change the schedule to daily because I realized just losing even one week of data is a lot of hard work to lose and have to repeat.

Most hosts do nightly backups but they also have a disclaimer saying they can’t be liable for failures and all the data could go ‘poof’ without them being held at fault. So, don’t rely on your hosting company, be proactive and back up your files at least once a week. The backups can be emailed or downloaded to your computer.

If you are running on WordPress, I highly recommend using Skippy’s plug-in for backup scheduling. It’s handy and you won’t have to remember to backup your site, it can be automated to do so for you.

FWIW, I have heard that the WP backup plugin is insecure and two bloggers that I know of seem to be pointing to it as a reason why they were hacked. I’ve since uninstalled it over at WGEN and our member sites. Here are two links for reference:

To me, I’d rather backup manually or automatically on the server side, than risk getting hacked.
