Using Snap Shots

You’ve probably seen this feature being used on a few websites…it’s even being used on this one. If you haven’t heard of Snap Shots, they provide a unique way to enhance your links with visual previews of the destination site. Since last fall, they have had over 700,000 new website sign-ups and have been previewed on sites like TechCrunch. Snap Shots serves an excellent way of aiding users to choose the links they actually want to click and in ways helps them trust the site prior to entering.

Some website publishers use this service to stray from ‘distracting’ readers from photos but I personally like to add photos to my sites. If used properly, they can provide extra color and enhance the look and feel. Of course, it all depends on the website and how many graphics are currently being used.

Placing Snap Shots on your website/blog:

Getting started is fairly easy. Visit Snap Shots to setup your account, choose the appropriate colors for your border, and include an optional logo/image. I highly recommend choosing the second option for your Snap Shot Trigger: “Snap Shots icon; Snap Shots triggered by the icon only”. The first option triggers by the icon and link which could be annoying. For readers who don’t want to see the Snap Shots, it can be easily disabled. All they need to do is click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and choose to opt-out.
